Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Final of The Golf Club Secretary - 17th Open Championship was played over the links of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake on a dry day but with the strongest of winds. Bernard Darwin stated "Mighty Winds - Mighty Champions" and this year's final produced both.

Those not contesting the Championship speculated during the first hour of play, that any scoring starting with a 3 would sand a very good chance of winning. Every facet of ones game was tested to the full, none more so than putting.

It was therefore not surprising that there were only three scores starting with a 3! One who nearly made it was Mark Evans (0) Royal North Devon with 29 pts which gained him fourth place, having had three threes from 11th-13th. David Owen (7) Poulton Park, who was level 2s after six holes, a by impressive start, found the back nine a little harder going, but finished with 30 pts, enough to finish in third.

There were two remarkably good scores of 32 pts, with Keith Adderley (13) Temple, scoring 21 pts on the front nine on the card (he had started at 15th) and losing out on count back to this year's Champion and one of our most loyal supports, Trevor Glover (9) more like scratch! Chesterfield.

Our thanks to everyone at Royal Liverpool who were outstanding.
A full report on the Championship and the very wet Sunday foursomes at Caldy will be posted shortly.

In the meantime go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipvince/sets/72157633474380495/ to view the splendid photographs taken by Philip.

All good wishes for a great golfing summer!

Kind regards,

Michael
