The testing course at Aldeburgh, not a par 5 in sight and with some of the best greens in the country, was played in blustery but warm and dry conditions, ensuring that the cream came to the top.
These days it often difficult to find the qualifiers from amongst some of those who have already made it to Royal St. George’s next May. At Aldeburgh it was particularly pleasing to see the ‘locals’ make such a good showing, the winner being Scott Ballentine (12) Royal Worlington, who commented that it was just like playing at home! He trounced the field with a superb 34pts. Runner-up and the first of the day’s qualifiers was John Cox (5) Tadmarton Heath, ably assisted by Di, with 29pts on countback from another in-form previous qualifier (and cake fancier) Keith Adderley (13) Temple. In fourth and fifth, also with 29pts on countback, were Martin Yates (5) and Matthew Bowman (13) King’s Lynn, the current Champion, both having secured their spots at the Final. Mike Verhelst (7) Bury St Edmunds was the last to make 29pts and he too qualified for the Final as did the redoubtable pudding expert, Bob Tawell (18) Rushmere, 28pts, whose run of Final appearances continues. Very well played to everyone.
It was a particularly fun day with the dining room buzzing with banter; our thanks therefore go to the Captain, Committee and Members of Aldeburgh, for allowing us to enjoy their ‘proper’ Club to the full. Sadly our host, Dick Jenkinson, missed out by a point, but hopefully he has witnessed enough of The GCS – Open to be tempted to enter again.
The support team were well represented, Barry Gibbs and John Hayes from CCV, were a very welcome addition to the regulars, Phil McInley of Eagle and Stefanie Mainstone from Jonas/Clubminder.
