It would be hard for any of the other Regional Qualifying Tournament venues to improve upon the perfection that was Burnham & Berrow. An immaculate links, a two club breeze, cloudless sky and shirt sleeve order; an Indian summer in Somerset.
The winner, John Cox (Tadmarton Heath) (5) with 35 pts, was no surprise as he confirmed that Burnham & Berrow was his favourite links course and that he had never seen it in finer condition. Runner-up was the furthest traveller and Championship stalwart Scott Ballentine (Royal Worlington) (12), with 34 pts. In third place came came the equally stoic Martyn Senior ( 5), qualifying as a warm-up for the Mike Miller organised UK Seniors’ event on subsequent days. In fourth place on countback was the equally loyal and well-travelled head of Clan Sjoberg, Neil (Epping) (8) with 33 pts.
Our thanks as always go to the Captain, Committee and members of Burnham & Berrow for their ever generous hospitality and support for The GCS – Open Championship.
Personal thanks go to host secretary Michael Blight, who despite a host of claims on his time on his first day back in the office after a short break, remained his calm amd unflappable self and attended to our every need, including our own pin flags.
Finally, our thanks as ever to the gallant band of supporters, headed on this occasion by father and daughter Mainstone (Jonas), Tim Read of Eagle Promotions, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal, Michael Weston and Tom Clarke of Golf Monthly and ‘new boy’ Ed Saxel of ispygolf. We all had the most marvellous day.
