How lucky we were at Camberley Heath to catch the last day of the Indian heatwave. A truly perfect golfing day with a nice breeze, a beautifully presented course, albeit one with heavy thick and very punishing rough. The ideal conditions brought out the best in many of the fifty plus competitors, resulting in some exceptional scores. John Douglass (7) Liphook must have thought that with 38pts he had done sufficient to claim first spot, however, less than an hour after he handed in his card, Paul Gaylor (10) Hartley Wintney came in with 39pts – a tremendous score, congratulations. Iain McColl (6) Hankley Common with 34pts was third. The remaining five qualifiers for the Final at Royal St. George’s next May were Terry Jackson (6) also with 34pts, Barry Hill (14) St. George’s Hill, David Mabbott (10) Eltham Warren, Brian Cullen (6) Crews Hill all had 33pts, whilst the final spot went to ‘new boy’ Alan Davey (6) Pyecombe, the leading competitor on 32pts.
A big ‘thank you’ to Chris Donovan who was an exemplary host together with his staff, who from Starter to waitress made us all most welcome.
We enjoyed the support of Phil McInley of Eagle and Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal, whose prizes were as always greatly admired, Stefanie Mainstone of Jonas/Clubminder and Steve Hemstock and Richard Barker of our latest supporters Teeofftimes, together with Kevin Murray and Michael Weston from Golf Monthly,
