Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, established in 1892, is one of the most prestigious and unusual private members golf clubs in England. Its character is formed both by its traditions – a 2-ball links with the membership preferring unfettered access and fast play – and by the tide, which blocks access periodically and provides the Club with its natural feel and spectacular seascape.

Due to the retirement of the incumbent, the Club now invites applications for the position of Secretary. The Club’s objective is to complement its unique topography with a well-presented golf course; appropriate level of House service; and distinctive ethos. The new secretary will be tasked with bringing this most traditional of clubs up to modern standards of golf club management, protecting and enhancing the Club’s enviable reputation in the golfing world.

The Secretary will be responsible for all aspects of running the Club and will have full administrative control of all departments. The role reports to the Club Captain.

Relevant Experience:

  • Staff management skills: setting objectives, managing performance, recruiting and training staff in a service setting, HR experience.
  • Some knowledge of greens management and current best practice would be helpful, but is not essential.
  • Experience in the provision of high quality House services (bar, catering, staff, front of house) in a members Club.
  • Experience in finance, administrative, web and IT functions.
  • Knowledge of the game of golf including rules, handicapping, and the running of competitions.
  • Leadership in a service industry environment.
  • A CMAE/GCMA qualification would be helpful, but is not a pre-condition.

The Candidate:

  • Strong people management skills: Building a team, finding congruency of purpose across departments, setting and maintaining levels of service.
  • Leadership: The Secretary leads the Club both internally and externally, representing the Club to visitors and external bodies and conveying the needs of the membership to Club staff. The successful candidate will have a natural authority and strong inter-personal skills.
  • Attention to detail: As a service organisation the role requires the Secretary to notice details, particularly around the Course and in the Clubhouse, such that levels of service can be maintained.
  • Initiative: The Secretary is the principal of the Club and will be expected to manage day to day activities without recourse to the Captain or Committee. This requires decision-making skills and initiative.
  • Conscientiousness: The Secretary and his team work flexible hours due to the fluctuating demands for service and access. The successful candidate will naturally adapt to such working conditions

Petersfield GC seeks a General Manager

Established in 1892, Petersfield is a very successful Hampshire Private Members Golf Club. The main course at Tankerdale Lane, Liss has been open for twenty years and has matured into a fine course with a growing reputation. Members also have access to a Pay and Play Facility at the original site of Petersfield Golf Club, located in Sussex Road, Petersfield. Membership stands at 600 with a significant opportunity for future growth.

Reporting to the Club Chair, the General Manager will be a full member of the Management Board of the Club and will be responsible for management of both courses.

The General Manager will manage the performance and effectiveness of all staff, including the direct management of personnel responsible for the Course, House and Administration and in addition manage relationships with franchised service providers.

The GM will deliver a One Team philosophy to provide the highest level of service to Members, Guests, Visitors and other stakeholders./span>

Candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • Strong interpersonal and people management skills and the ability to communicate with members, visitors and third parties, including managing media.
  • Experience in the smooth running of a golf club and all its facilities delivering a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Exceptional organisational and administrative skills with a good knowledge of IT systems, in particular effective use of social media.
  • Ability to manage Club finances and show previous experience of financial planning including budget development, cost control, preparation and analysis of monthly Management Accounts.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations and best practice, including Health and Safety, to ensure compliance.
  • Pro-active commercial management to drive visitor revenue, member recruitment and other business opportunities.
  • Sound working knowledge of basic agronomics and course presentation.
  • The highest standards of integrity and diplomacy.
