We arrived at Conwy – the sky was cloudless, hardly a breath of wind, the broom a brilliant yellow, the links fast running – sweaterless golf in April, it was perfect, but that was the evening before!
April 11th dawned dark and rainy, we all set out to play in perfectly horrid conditions for anything up to seven holes. Then the rain stopped, the wind abated a little and eventually the sun came out.
Our winner simply shrugged off the unpleasant conditions, finishing with an incredible 39pts – Brian Lever (11) Great Yarmouth & Caister has tried on no fewer than seven previous occasions to qualify for the Final at Ganton next month, but at Conwy he romped home in style. There were two other qualifiers, John Clarke (10) Worsley and Neil Annandale (13) Hesketh on 30pts. Our congratulations to all three of them.
Thanks, as ever, go to the Members of Conwy and to their recently appointed secretary, Chris Chance, for their generous hospitality, also to Lisa behind and in front of the bar, who made everything flow so smoothly.
A word of thanks for our support Team; Paul Mainstone of Jonas/Clubminder, who had a dreadful journey, Sharn Etherton and Richard Dancy of Golf Locker Security and not forgetting Dean Poynter of Eagle whose new handicap gave him 35pts; our thanks to everyone.
There were a couple of distinguished guests, Richard Dixon, CEO of The Golf Union of Wales, was most ably assisted round the links by his faithful ‘caddy’ Eeva and another who made a long journey to be with us was Richard Barker of Teeofftimes. We hope you enjoyed the day or least when you had reached the comfort of the clubhouse.
