The Swim to Formby

We have seriously hacked off the golfing weather gods this autumn!

Headingley, in its 125th year, is a Club at the top of its game, from lounge to locker room, not to mention the best showers! However, despite starting a few minutes early, none of the competitors in the fourth round of the Race to Formby escaped an absolute soaking, several times over. It was a great pity as the course is delightful and improving day by day thanks to the green staff and the skills of tree specialist John Nicholson (see next month’s GCS).

The happy winner (pictured with Jezz Ellwood) was David Owen (10) Poulton Park, a hardy annual qualifier, with a terrific score in the conditions, of 32pts. However, it was unnecessary to know at what stage of the round his underwear became waterlogged, but it did illustrate the difficulties faced by all. Runner-up was a ’new boy’ James Washington (9) Bradford and in third was our host Jon Hall (3) who had qualified at Hoylake earlier in the week. The remaining qualifying spot went to Kirkby Lonsdale’s David Towers (6).

Please view full scores here.

Our thanks go to the Members for sensibly staying inside and allowing us to play uninterrupted and to Jon Hall and his team who made us most welcome, with great attention to detail. A tip top caterer with the best egg and bacon rolls to date… Despite the awful weather, one only had to listen to the chat over lunch to know that everyone was resigned and not at all unhappy. Lunch itself was excellent and greatly appreciated by all, especially those who hadn’t played so well!

On chocolate duty (we discovered that Quality Street don’t ‘travel’ well in the wet) and scoring was Paul Mainstone of Sawted; we were also joined by Roger Gillingwater of Marsh and the doughty Dean Poynter of Eagle.

Never mind. Onwards and upwards – after four events we now have 24 qualifiers for the Final at Formby.

For the Finalists – a reminder:
Accommodation for the Final will be at The Ramada Plaza, Southport PR9 0DZ, a luxury 4-star hotel set in the heart of the town’s modern waterfront development and one that has received The Golf Club Secretary seal of approval on several occasions in the past.
