Huddersfield (Fixby) 22nd October 2012

Fixby……. It was supposed to be the best of times, on top of the World even, instead we were met by low cloud and incessant drizzle and a thoroughly miserable day, the worst of times and the Season of Darkness indeed. Thanks and congratulations to everyone, for braving the difficult journey, no matter how short, to make it to Fixby, via the dreaded M62.

Perhaps with hindsight it would have been sensible to play from the yellow tees; had that been the case the chances are that the result would not have been greatly different, although the winning score might have been more than the 30pts achieved by the much travelled and hugely supportive Martin Gillett (5) Hobbs Cross. Despite the conditions and the wearing of glasses, his drives continued to boom and his irons fly like arrows. Runner-up was another loyal supporter and previous qualifier, who is in imperious form – Trevor Glover (9) Chesterfield made an excellent 29pts, despite fading over the finishing holes. David Owen (7) Poulton Park, with 28pts was third and together with Mick Wain (11) Matlock, 26pts, Stephen Boustead (17) Westend 26 pts and Dennis Wright (5) Penrith, 25pts, all are going direct to Heaven in the form of the Final at Royal Liverpool (and Caldy) in May next year. Please come and try again, in particular the ‘new boys’, it can only get better!? Fairhaven on Tuesday 9th April? See www.TheGolfClubSecretary.co.uk for up-dated entry form.

Our thanks to all at Huddersfield Golf Club for their welcome, especially the Members, Captain and Committee for allowing us to stage another event at their Club. May we please return in another year when the conditions will be more representative of this wonderful course?

The support Team was out in force. Stefanie Mainstone of Jonas/ClubMinder made a flying and most helpful visit together with ever smiling colleague Jonathan Coates. Also TeeOffTimes’ Rob Corcoran, a golfer of excellent technique, whose 26pts could have been a good deal better, with a little luck on the greens. As always, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal not only provided the prizes but dispensed a much needed energy boost on the 10th tee before the climb into the second nine. Last but by no means least, the doyen of the collateral world, Dean Poynter of Eagle, who for once did not have too far to travel. Thank you. We hope the fortified coffee helped to ease the pain?
