The penultimate Regional Qualifying Tournament for The Golf Club Secretary – 18th Open Championship was played over Moor Park’s High Course, which with firm, fast, putting surfaces, proved testing and in superb order for the time of year. The weather too played its part, with virtually wall to wall sunshine.
The winner was Patrick Dawson (8) Bunrham Beeches, a previous qualifier at Royal County Down, this time with an outstanding 37pts (against 11 at RCD!). Runner up and also a previous qualifier was the evergreen, Michael Morley (20) Hadden Hill on 36pts. There were six qualifiers for the Final at St Enodoc on Monday, May 19th: Bill Dunn (14) Radcliffe on Trent 36pts, John Broome (14), back on ‘home turf’ 35pts, Keith Fisher (14) Rowlands Castle, ably assisted by Diana, with 33pts, Ian Walton (6) Ferndown, Garry Peddie (7) Parkstone and Mick Wain (11) Matlock all on 31pts. We look forward to seeing all of them at Trevose on Sunday 18th May.
Our thanks go to all at Moor Park, especially Jonathan Dove, Louise Kay and CEO David Cook. There was not a competitor in the dining room who had not enjoyed and admired the course, irrespective of their score and of course the most stunning of Mansions (you could not possibly call it a clubhouse?). We would like to thank all at Moor Park for their generosity in allowing us to stage this Regional Qualifying Tournament at this most historic of venues. We all look forward to returning in the future.
We wished Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal a speedy recovery, and thanked Phil McInley of Eagle, Catherine Hanrahan of Jonas/Clubminder, Kevin Evans of Clubview and Chris O’Hagan of TeeoffTimes for their attendance. We are, as always, extremely grateful for their support both behind the scenes and on the day. It was also a great pleasure to have Robert Twydle, one of our most valuable contributors, of Hillier Hopkins with us.
