Well-nigh perfect benign conditions greeted the competitors in the third Regional Qualifying Tournament for The Golf Club Secretary – 20th Open Championship played over the historic links of the North Berwick Golf Club; even the sun made a brief appearance.
It was perhaps unsurprising therefore that it was the ‘locals’ who took full advantage. Former North Berwick secretary and tour guide, John Douglass (7) Liphook won on countback from the well-travelled Mike Verhelst (7) Bury St Edmonds, with excellent scores of 39pts. In third was another ‘local’ David Morgan (7) Gullane on 36pts, whilst Patrick Dawson (8) Burnham Beeches and one of the winner’s ‘tourists’, was fourth, a point behind on 35pts. The final qualifying spot went, quite rightly, to our host Chris Spencer (5), who dutifully breathed a large sigh of relief! They are all off to the Final at Royal West Norfolk in May next year, where a shotgun start awaits them from, in their cases, the 3rd and 17th tees.
It is always a treat to play North Berwick and on this occasion everyone should be congratulated that it took an average of 3 hours 40 mins; well played one and all.
Our thanks go to Chris and his staff for such a warm welcome and a cracking ‘lunch’, the freshest of fish (and the chips were good too), as well of course to the Captain, Committee and Members of the Club for once again allowing us to play – it is a great privilege and one that we all treasure.
Our thanks to Tammy Hewins of intelligentgolf for the excellent and prompt scoring service, to Barry Johnston of Teeofftime/BRS and to Viv for making the prize presentation in her favourite Club. Never forgetting Philip Vince of Majestic whose prizes were much appreciated as ever and to Eagle for the scorecards, much admired by competitors and members alike.
DON’T FORGET – act now enter one of the remaining 4 Regional Qualifying Tournaments (in the spring of next year) WHILST THERE IS STILL SPACE?
