Pennard GC – 24th October 2016

Pennard, the fifth qualifying Tournament for The Golf Club Secretary21st Open Championship, was a surprise for most of the competitors and to be met on the approach road by several cows who seemed oblivious to cars and golf balls alike was different to say the least. The splendid ‘new’ clubhouse and the most welcoming club staff offered very hospitable sanctuary from the herd!

It wasn’t until, towards the end of the select field, that Iain McColl making his way up the right side of the 1st saw off the cattle with a couple of very near misses ensuring that the entire heard sauntered off somewhere to the right of the 1st green and were never seen again.

Pennard styles itself ‘The Links in the Sky’ which hardly does justice to the stunning views, and excellent course – with one or two quirky holes. It is a fantastic test and a great pleasure to play. We will all be back at some point, hopefully with some much better weather. In the meantime we would like to thank all at the Club for their generosity in allowing us to stage a Regional Qualifying Tournament there.

Unsurprisingly, with local knowledge playing a significant part in a good score, our host, Huw Morgan (12), was amongst the prize winners and qualifiers – third with 30pts. The winner, being a previous qualifier for the Final at Rye in May 2017, was Bill Dunn (14) Radcliffe on Trent with a splendid 33pts, comfortably out distancing the field. Runner-up with 31pts was John Holmes (5) Crowborough Beacon, putting in a very determined performance after his assistant had qualified at Deal the week before! Scott Ballentine (12) Royal Worlington & Newmarket finished fourth with 29pts on countback; he had previously qualified and so the final qualifying place went to ‘new boy’ Keith Crawford (5) Thurlestone also on 29pts. Our thanks go to all who made the very worthwhile journey to Pennard, hopefully we can attract more ‘locals’ in the future!?

Our thanks too to John Hayes of Marsh who made a five hour journey to be with us – Marsh’s support is greatly appreciated, once again. Next week we are at Seascale another venue ‘off the beaten track’ with an outstanding chance of qualifying…

PS thanks to Keith & Diana for the fastest (!?) w
