Royal North Devon GC – Devon. Monday 27th October 2014
As our winner of the fourth Regional Qualifying Tournament so aptly commented, “this is golf as it should be played” (nothing to do with his eagle, birdie start?). We were indeed privileged to again play our competition over England’s oldest links, with the added bonus of being able to view the Club’s fantastic collection of golfing memorabilia and all in its 150th year. Our modest congratulations and grateful thanks.
We were fortunate to be dry throughout, despite what appeared to be the End of the World going on around us and out to sea.
The Westward Ho! links take a little knowing and it was no surprise to see the locals do so well. Although Martin Gillett (6) Hobbs Cross, had qualified in seventh spot at The Richmond the week before, it was the inspiration of the historic Royal North Devon links, complete with horses and turquoise sheep, that inspired him to produce some wonderful golf and claim the winner’s prize, with an outstanding 41 pts. There were three qualifiers, runner-up was our host Mark Evans (1) Royal North Devon, with 38 pts followed on count back, with 36 pts, by his long-time local sparring partner and very loyal GCS supporter, Tim Aggett (1) Staddon Heights (minus caddy!). The third qualifier was a ‘new boy’ Mark Haskell (4) Teignmouth also with 36 pts. Our congratulations to them all and we look forward to seeing them again soon, and if not, at Hillside next May for the 19th Final.
Our thanks to the Captain, Committee and members for allowing us to join them in their year of celebration, it was a joy. The Club was as friendly and hospitable as ever and the steak and/or chicken pies produce by chef Royston sent RND climbing the culinary leaderboard.
A large ‘thank you’ to the Supporters present, Paul Mainstone of Keystone had several hats to wear (!) scorer, photographer and chocolatier, all with assistance from Viv, also to Charlie Swan of Teeofftimes, who had worked hard on our behalf to generate some interest from the ‘locals’ and Tim Read of Eagle.
