The shoots of spring were much in evidence at Royal Wimbledon, the day was fair, occasional spits of rain and of course a finish in GCS sunshine; a grand and royal opening to 2011.
The arrangements were perfection, coffee, bacon and/or sausage rolls, and homemade Danish pastries and just about everyone arriving on time, nothing short of a miracle with such an early start.
After overnight heavy rain the course was playing its full length and off the White tees a true test. Class of course will out and James Tucker (2) Denham came home with an excellent 36pts (only beaten by Mike Harris (6) Golf Monthly, who had already qualified and doesn’t count).
Runner-up was Martin Bennett (10) Mid Herts on 35pts with Ian Walton (6) Hayling in third with 33pts. The other three qualifiers were Gaye Sjoberg (14) Epping 32pts, joining husband Neil at Ganton and preserving harmony, Martin Yates (6) and Tim Aggett (1) Staddon Heights also both on 32pts and finally on 31pts Brian James (18) Woodcote Park . Our congratulations to them all and we very much hope to see them joining the other Finalists at Ganton in May.
Our thanks go to The Captain, Committee and members of Royal Wimbledon for so generously giving up their course for the morning and in particular to one of our most staunch supporters our host Secretary , Norman Smith, who has our very best wishes for a long and enjoyable retirement which starts quite soon; special thanks to Norman too for all the ‘touches’ he organised and to Assistant Secretary Lisa Duvar who was on hand all day to ensure everything went perfectly which it did. ‘Lunch’ was the icing on the cake!
The Top ‘Supporters’ Team were out in force, Richard Dancy and Sharn Etherton of Golf Locker Security, Paul and Stefanie Mainstone and Steve Berger of Jonas/Clubminder, Mike Harris and Jezz Ellwood of Golf Monthly, recent ‘birthday boy’ Phillip Vince of Majestic Crystal and not forgetting Andrew Brown of Eagle whose design for our 16th Open Championship entry form drew much admiration from the competitors. Thank you one and all.
There is only one Regional Qualifying Tournament remaining for this year’s Open Championship, Conwy on April 11th. There still places available, however, t he draw will be made over this forthcoming weekend, so email your entry NOW!
