Royal Wimbledon GC – Wimbledon Common Monday 11th April 2016
Location, location and location… Getting to Royal Wimbledon for even a 09.45 start proved to be very difficult for many and a great deal of shuffling of the draw was required, for which we thank everyone for their patience and understanding. The weather too played its part – the last few groups being the unlucky ones, as the promised rain arrived and descend vertically and heavily for the last few holes. The course was in splendid order for the time of year and scoring was well up to scratch.
Local knowledge isn’t always a plus? But a win by a clear five points confirmed that our host Robert Brewer (14) was also on top of his game. Runner-up with 34pts, 22pts on the back nine (after a ‘bollocking’ at the turn from his loyal caddie ’Head Girl’ Diana) was Keith Fisher (15) Rowlands Castle, who returns to the Final, yet again, having attended the first at Hintlesham Hall, 20 years ago and many in between. Kevin Mullen (12) Coombe Wood, also with 34pts came third, on countback, from Keith Duff (11) a most valued Contributor to The GCS, but who, on this occasion sadly cannot join us at Brancaster in May. The remaining qualifiers for the Final were Iain McColl (6) Hankley Common 33pts, ‘new boy’ Matthew Fletcher (7) Came Down 31pts and Stephen Billings (2) Redlibbets with 30pts. We look forward to seeing you all in just over a month at Brancaster.
Our thanks go to everyone at Royal Wimbledon – 150 not out! Patient members on the 1st tee, Marshall John Duncan, Assistant Secretary, Richard Pennell who stayed behind so ‘the boss’ could win! Chef Simon, who produce a wonderful breakfast and an even more wonderful carvery lunch. Everywhere the attention to detail was second to none. Our thanks to all the members for their generosity in allowing us to stage another successful Regional Qualifying Tournament at their Club and to our host Secretary, Robert Brewer, again very well played.
Our invaluable supporters were with us in force, Mike Harris of Golf Monthly, Charlie Swann of Teeofftimes/BRS, Jamie Abbott of intelligentgolf, who not only managed the scoring and leader board but scored an excellent 32pts to ‘qualify’. Last but by no means least, was Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal – chocolate, photos (link to follow), prizes = a BIG thank you. It was also a great pleasure to have Robert Twydle, Carolyne Wahlen, John Hayes and Simon Creagh Chapman join us for various parts of the day.
There is plenty of space at the ‘Last Chance Saloon’: Goswick Links the home of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Golf Club (a couple of minutes off the A1) next Monday, 18th April and the odds of qualifying currently are the best ever! Enter NOW and perhaps join us at the FINAL?
