It was great pity that we didn’t attract a larger field for the Regional Qualifying Tournament at Seaton Carew, it is a most wonderful links and the day was perfect for golf, shirt sleeve order, with hardly a breath of wind and sufficient of a challenge that one didn’t even notice the view! Competitors came from far and wide, Essex, Suffolk, Sussex and Scotland were represented and much to our delight a good number of ‘new boys’ from the locale. All appeared to enjoy themselves thoroughly and we hope that they will all have another crack at qualifying either later this year or in the spring.
The winner was Neill Ellice (10) Ipswich with 36 pts (despite blobbing the last…), who was mightily relieved to have qualified at his third attempt and to avoid the ignominy of having to caddy for Bob Tawell, his doughty travelling companion, in the Final at Rye next May!
Second came Christopher Spencer (5) North Berwick on 35pts, that pipped the third qualifier Douglas Neave (6) Royal Ashdown Forest on countback, our congratulations to them on reaching the Final.
Mention must be made of Dean Poynter of Eagle, our sole supporter on this occasion, who for once found a links to his liking and scored a superb 36pts. Well done and thank you.
Finally, our thanks to the Captain, Committee and Members of Seaton Carew for their generosity in allowing us to hold the event at their historic Club (The former Durham and North Yorkshire Golf Club) and particular for choosing the Micklem course, a name and presence that golf in England sorely misses. Seaton Carew with its ‘extra’ holes (that any links would love to acquire) can boast a total of five different layouts! Our thanks too to the Club caterer, Debbie, who showed us what a truly delicious dish fish and chips can be.
