It was a very pleasant autumnal day, no rain, overcast, cool, without being cold and the course, undergoing some serious seasonal maintenance, looked a picture.
The winner was a ‘new boy’ Mick Wain (11) Matlock with 33pts, runner up was Stephen Armstead (8) Manchester also with 33 pts, who had previously qualified at Ladybank. Third was David Owen (7) Poulton Park, fourth Graham Finney (14) Mickleover and the final qualifier was the evergreen Neill Ellice (10) Ipswich, all on 32pts.
Shot of the day was played by David Beck (16) Leamington and County. Standing on the 8th tee, there was a group of greenkeepers renovating a path through the heather from tee to fairway; at about 200 yards and slightly to the left of the line of play, they had parked their tractor and trailer. They sensibly stood aside, whilst a couple of drives fizzed past and close. David then stepped up, strikes an excellent shot which lands with an almighty ‘ping’ on the flat bed of the trailer… never deviating from its line the ball carries on to the middle of the fairway – such accuracy!
Our thanks go to the Captain, Committee and members of Sherwood Forest for their very generous hospitality and support for The Golf Club Secretary – Open Championship, and especially to host secretary, Gary Mason, who was outstandingly helpful. The specially printed menu at ‘lunch’ contained a very kind message “Please enjoy your meal and we hope that you will come back and visit us again.” We most certainly will – thank you.
Finally, our thanks to our supporters; headed on this occasion by Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal who was very ably assisted by Paul Mainstone of Jonas/Clubminder. Dean Poynter of Eagle Promotions (34pts) and Richard Dancy of Golf Locker Security (35pts) also both ’qualified’, well played.
