Thorpeness GC – Suffolk Monday 14th March 2016
Our thanks to all who made their way to Thorpeness on the outer limits of Suffolk to play in the inaugural Golf Club Secretary – Open Mixed Foursomes. It proved to be a fun event and one that we will do our best to continue next year.
There were very worthy winners in Chris Gotla and Cathy Rees (16) from North Hants 30pts who won on countback from Neil and Gaye Sjoberg (12) Epping. A considerable number of the contestants stayed at the Hotel and a fun filled evening ensued.
Monday dawned brighter, but not much warmer, and the chilly wind persisted throughout the day, which made scoring difficult on a course playing long with quick early season greens. Gaye Sjoberg (15) Epping returned to the fray and collected an excellent 34pts, winning on countback from ‘new boy’ Ben Tawell (7), the newly appointed secretary of Newton Green near Colchester. The other two qualifiers were Paul Smith (6) Faversham with 33 pts with Adrian Dawson (8) Woodcote Park once again qualifying for a Final with 30 pts. Mike Verhelst (7) Bury St Edmunds, a previous qualifier, came fourth also on 33pts. We look forward to seeing them all again at Brancaster in May.
All things went pretty well at Thorpeness Hotel & Golf Club and hopefully we did not cause too much disruption for the other guests; we were very grateful to Henrietta Lewis for overseeing matters and smoothing our path.
Our thanks too to Tarah McNaughton Teeoftimes/BRS, Dean Poynter of Eagle for their support, to Jamie Abbott M/D of intelligentgolf, whose scoring/system is absolutely spot on and of course to the multi-talented Mr Vince of Majestic Crystal who not only presented the prizes, took the photos, provided the chocolate, but also carried the bags!
To join the FINAL party at Royal West Norfolk on Monday May 16th, you can still enter (and qualify) at Royal Wimbledon on Monday, 11th April and/or at Goswick on the following Monday, April 18th.
