What a relief… a lovely sunny day at Walton Heath. Despite the difficulties of a two tee start and considerable patience shown by all those who trooped out to the 11th, making that tee shot and the one from 1st both very testing, scoring was exceptionally good.
No fewer than four competitors returned a score of 38pts, with Patrick Dawson coming home in one under gross for 23 pts on the back nine winning on countback.
Patrick, the newly installed secretary/manager at West Hill in Surrey, who was qualifying for the second time; made an excellent winners speech, bemoaning the fact that his predecessor had seen fit to arrange the Club’s over 50s’ Open Foursomes competition on the same day as the Final of The Golf Club Secretary – 21st Open Championship. Something that won’t occur again we suspect…?
Runner up with 20 pts on the back nine was Alex Woodward (+1) Boyce Hill, round in three under par – enough said!?
In third place was David Bowles (13) Flackwell Heath, with two halves of 19pts and in fourth another previous qualifier Brian Lever (15) Beccles.
There were nine further qualifiers: Alan Davey (6) Pyecombe 37pts, ‘new boy’ Tom Scott (10) Wildernesse 37pts, Greg Kemsley (5) Hassocks 37pts, Ray Grant (12) Northwood 36 pts, Keith Fisher (15) Rowlands Castle 36pts, John Hemphrey (5) Bearsted 36 pts, Luke Edgecumbe (36) pts Royal Mid Surrey, Adrian Dawson (8) Woodcote Park 36 pts and Phil Bonsall (2) Piltdown 36pts. Our congratulations to them all and we look forward to seeing them at Rye on the 21st/22nd May. There is still space at Berkhamsted on April 10th and a possible eight places at Hunstanton next Monday? Email your entry to Michael@golfclubsec.co.uk
There was wonderful consolation for all those who ‘nearly’ qualified; lunch was at its magnificent Walton Heath best and many were so spoilt for choice they tried everything.
Our thanks go to Stuart Christie and his team, especially Caroline and Jemma, for all their help in re-scheduling this most welcome of fixtures and for making the day run so very smoothly. We recognise that this is an ‘every day’ occurrence for Walton Heath but not for us – we really appreciate and recognise the high standards and all the touches.
Unsurprisingly we had a full complement of very nearly fit Supporters – Jamie Abbott MD of intelligentgolf, Phil McInley MD of Eagle Pormotions, in a very tasteful surgical boot (very well played!), John Hayes of Marsh, who had his best score in a GCS competition and is rising up the leaderboard with growing confidence. Charlie Swann of Teeofftimes/BRS, a magician who continues to find ‘new’ competitors for us (all of whom seem to enjoy themselves a great deal!?), Chris O’Hagan of Golf Monthly, bombing it great distances, but with his mind on a belated honeymoon that will take in the Texas Open! (as spectators). Sadly we were without Chris’s Editor at Golf Monthly, Mike Harris – a nasty accident emptying the dishwasher… And finally the ever present P Vince, supplier of chocolate (and Crystal prizes) to the World of Golf, without whom our world would be very dull – if on occasions (top of the back swing?) a quieter place.
A word of thanks too to Ian Macleod Distillers and Alan Wardrop for their sporting support and the supply of Edinburgh Gin – delightful! Visit www.edinburghgindistillery.co.uk for a top up!
Our thanks to them all – for without them we wouldn’t have The Championship that we do. Which is THE BEST.
