The Race to Formby – round two

A brilliantly sunny day, shirt sleeve order for many, for round two of The GCS – 22nd Open Championship at Wildernesse, produced excellent scoring even off the Whites.

The winner was ‘new boy’ Steve Gledhill (10) West Kent with an excellent 38pts, on count back from host deputy secretary Tom Scott (9) Wildernesse. The 19th (Hillside) Open Champion (doesn’t time fly) Alan Davey (7) Pyecombe came third with 36pts. The fourth qualifying spot wen to Steve Armstrong (20) Mid Kent, back in good form with a new knee, on 35pts. Our congratulations on reaching the Final at Formby next May.

We were blessed with proper GCS weather, a very warm welcome, delightful course and an exceptional lunch. Our thanks to Andrew Lawrence and Tom Scott our hosts and of course to the Captain, Committee and Members of the Club. With its re-developed clubhouse it is no wonder that Wildernesse is such a popular venue for members and visitors alike.

Thanks too to Paul Mainstone and Dave Myers (sorry about the jacket and tie Dave) of Sawted for looking after the scoring, Phil McInley of Eagle, Nick Eden of BRS/Teeofftimes and John Hayes of supporters Marsh.

Thanks to Majestic Crystal, this year’s prize table has already provoked much favourable comment, not least the Robinsons barley water! Philip recruited an able assistant, Tracey Hodson of Rochford Hundred, for chocolate dispensing – a boost as always.

Finally a very big thank you to Diana Fisher for her secretarial assistance and ensuring that everyone knew it was preferred lies…

Photos and full scores to follow on the website.

Plenty of space at both Gog Magog on 26th October and Moor Park on 30th October – join the race to Formby, let us know?
