Worplesdon….. Dry at last! dry at last, thank heavens, we were dry at last – well almost. Gloomy certainly, a tiny bit of drizzle, but throughout most of the round, it remained dry; although the going in places could be described as heavy, the course, as always was in wonderful order.
As anyone who has had the opportunity to read The Golf Club Secretary – 17th Open Championship, up-dating newsletter, which we sent out by email earlier this week, the Championship would not be what it is without our supporters. They were out in force at Worplesdon, for which we were very grateful, led by Barry Gibbs and John Hayes of C C V, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal, Phil McInley of Eagle, Stefanie Mainstone of Jonas/Clubminder and Kevin Evans of Clubview, Mike Harris and James Bunce of Golf Monthly and Richard Barker of TeeoffTimes, we thank them all for their continued and invaluable support.
The winner was John Broome (12), formerly of Moor Park and now one of the most insightful contributors to the newsletter, with a superb 40pts, very well played! The runner up, playing off (13), but not for much longer… and a previous qualifier, was Scott Ballentine (13) Royal Worlington, with 39pts. Ross McCue (3) West Herts came third with 38pts. The other qualifiers were Alan Findlater (5) Pinner Hill and our host for the day, Chris Lomas (4) Worplesdon with 38pts, (Chris using his skill, rather than local knowledge, to make two twos!). The two remaining qualifiers each scored 36pts, the ever supportive Neil Sjoberg (8) Epping was ahead, on countback, of Alan Davey (6) Pyecombe. As ever our congratulations to all the qualifiers for the Final at Hoylake next May and to all the other competitors our thanks for their participation – better luck next time? Get your entries in early for Royal Worlington & Newmarket on March 21st, Fairhaven on April 9th and Parkstone on April 17th, where there are only 16 places remaining! Visit www.TheGolfClubSecretary.co.uk for an entry form – now.
Obviously our largest thanks go to Worplesdon Golf Club and the Captain, Committee and Members of this wonderful Club for allowing us to once again stage an event over their excellent, and ever improving, course. Our thanks too to Chris Lomas (and Charlie), the day ran like clockwork, course, bar and catering were all faultless. Please may we return?
