Bamburgh Castle GC – Monday, 1st October 2018

For many the weekend between Ladybank and the next Regional Qualifying Tournament at Bamburgh Castle involved wonderful links golf, Gullane No. 1 on Saturday afternoon thanks to General Manager, David Morgan, followed by a most enjoyable supper in the clubhouse and on Sunday a game over the glorious links of Goswick, thanks to secretary Rory Davidson. As one of the ‘tourists’ put it “an absolutely superb trip to Scotland and Northumberland”. Thanks to all who travelled so far and supported The GCS – Open.

Bamburgh Castle is not for the faint hearted; it is hilly, even mountainous, with many blind and exacting shots to be played (Alan Davey commenting that he had struck “a blind drive, a blind second, I’m waiting for a blind putt”). But that did nothing to deter The GCS – Open competitors. Our colleague Andy Crummey (5) came close to The GCS – Open record with 41pts.

Peter Simpson receives his prize

A local guest Peter Simpson (0) Alnmouth scored an equally impressive 37pts to take the first prize. Runner up was the NGCAA’s CEO Alistair Smith (11) with 35pts and in third place came tourist Alan Davey (8) with 34pts. There were three qualifiers: Steve Boustead (15) also with 34pts and a little further down the list, as the attached scores will testify, came Tim Aggett (0) Sidmouth with 32pts, another long distance traveller who made his and wife Mandy’s journey worthwhile by qualifying for next year’s Final at Ganton and finally ‘new  boy’ Paul Weatherill (13) Baildon with 31pts. As always congratulations on reaching the Final.

We received a very warm from Paul Stout, one minute behind the bar, next answering a phone call, next in the kitchen, tireless and charming and he and his wife produced a delicious lunch to follow our quite tiring round. Thanks to them and to all at Bamburgh Castle, especially Captain Ali Gilhome, with whom we arranged the day, thanks to our mutual fiend Judy Barker of Bishop’s Stortford.

Once again the Supporters played their part. Neil Hartley of Bluefin Sport a newcomer scored 35pts whilst Malcolm Pennycott of Eagle turned in 33pts. It was also very good to be joined for lunch by Scott Howe also of Bluefin Sport.

As you have already read, Craig Higgs of Golf Genius not only played well (32pts) but notated the entire event on his phone and software and gave us the ‘overview’. Very impressive.
