Broadstone GC – Tuesday, 1st October 2019

The third round of The GCS - 24th Open Championship took place at Broadstone, where the forecast for the day was dire, with flooding widespread throughout the country. But true to GCS form we were able to play without any interruption and even some sunshine. The course played beautifully given the soaking it had received in the preceding 24 hours.

A man in form is Alan Davey (7), past secretary/manager of Pyecombe now the Club’s captain and a contributor to The Golf Club Secretary newsletter. He plays a lot of golf… and with 37pts was the clear winner.

Les Trute (13) Marlborough, who, despite a hiccup on the back nine (reading the leaderboard!), made 7pts on the last two holes to finish with 34pts and claim second place. Third came Kevin Mullen (13) West Byfleet with 33pts and the final qualifying place went to Ian Walton (6) Ferndown with 32pts, all booking their place in the Final at Saunton next May.

Two mentions in dispatches – Golf Car UK’s touring professional Matt Patton (was off 12, now off 10) made his usual 35pts and The GCS’s much-travelled Jezz Ellwood scored 34pts.

Everyone is now coming to terms with and enjoying Live Scoring… it not only produces a prompt result (we were able to make the prize presentation prior to ‘lunch’) but allows you to see, during the round, where you are in relation to the field. N.B. such readily available scoring information nearly tripped up one competitor, but he came through with flying colours.

Our thanks to our tireless host, Ed Richardson, whose team on the course worked miracles to make it perfectly playable; also to the club members who later benefited from The GCS weather!

Our Supporters were well represented – Bluefin Sport by David Christmas, Eagle by Liam Burns (only 31pts), Golf Car UK by Marc McCracken (and their pro). Scoring was in the hands of Craig Higgs of Golf Genius who had flown down from sunny Yorkshire for the day. We will be adding more of their scoring extras later in the season.

Finally, thanks to Majestic Crystal’s own star(ship trooper) flashing away (with his camera) and dispensing bonhomie and chocolate largesse in equally measure. Place your Christmas order now…
