Delamere Forest GC – Thursday, 25th October 2018

The Regional Qualifying Tournament for The GCS – 23rd Open Championship held at Delamere Forest had a distinctly autumnal feel – a very light drizzle giving way eventually to a glimpse of the sun and better playing conditions.

The winner was one of the furthest travellers and loyal supporter of the Championship, Brian Lever (15) Beecles with 38pts

Scoring was exceptionally good, a testament to the condition of this Cheshire gem. It truly is a perfect member’s Club. Our thanks go to all at Delamere for their generosity in allowing us to return and to secretary Mike Towers and his entire team, both on and off  the course, for looking after us so well. We are indeed very fortunate.

Runner up and another regular ‘tourist’, with on this occasion almost a home fixture was Chris Cuttler (6) Dore & Totley with 37pts and in third, a further point behind, was a guest Steve Alcock (12) Clitheroe with 36pts, pipping Chris Williams (5) Hillside and `the third qualifier on count back. Karl Adams (0) Radcliffe on Trent headed those on 35pts, who all qualified for the Final at Ganton in May 2019, David Owen (9) Poulton Park and Scott Ballentine (10) Royal Worlington being the other two, with Darren Murphy (0) Harborne coming in with the same score, he having already qualified previously at The Berkshire. A special mention too for Phil Gibson of Tacit/Eagle who on only his third appearance on a course in 2018, scored 37pts. Well played everyone and congratulations on joining the 23rd Open Finalists.

The day witnessed a scene worthy of Friends Reunited, Stuart Everall, Barnard Castle Richard Gallier, Wrekin had last seen each other 43 years ago at school! Happy day…

Thanks to Bob King of BRS/Teeofftimes and  Chris Ivess-Mash, out of the Golf Car UK office and into the buggy with refreshments whilst colleague Matt Patton tackled the course. ‘New boy’ Nick Stocking, another genius, joined Craig Higgs from Golf Genius, demonstrating yet more advances and flexibility to their splendid scoring system which produced the perfect results. It was good to meet with Michael Humble of William Turner, who may very well be charged with the task of producing the stunning 23rd Open tie!

A lot of care and thought goes into Philip’s photography not to mention the much admired prizes – thank you Mr Vince and Majestic Crystal. You will find the pics at www.majesticcrystal.co.uk/. Browse the catalogue – some interesting new goodies and tantalising text.
