For those still trying to make it to the Final at Brancaster in May it proved to be doubly worthwhile… and leading that distinguished group was the day’s winner, who had had a couple of near misses earlier in the season. Brian Lever (13) Beccles took the honours with an excellent 32pts. Runner-up also on 32pts was Martin Gillett (6) Hobbs Cross, a previous qualifier on several occasions. In third place on 31pts was a ‘new boy’ to the Championship Stuart Graham (5) Luffness, who sadly couldn’t make the Final due to a previous commitment to watch his daughter play hockey in Prague! The last prize winner was staunch supporter Chris Spencer (5) North Berwick, also on 31pts, he too having qualified previously. That left the way open for some sterling back nine performances from Richard Penley-Martin (5) Ganton who doubled his front nine score. Barry McGregor (9) Heworth trebled his front nine score, who together with Howard Till, who faded ever so slightly over the closing holes, bagged the final qualifying places.
Our congratulations to them all and we very much look forward to seeing everyone at Sheringham and Brancaster in a month’s time. Finally, one of our own number, Andy Crummey (5) a former Captain at his home Club Gullane, who has done much to assist us with The GCS over recent months, topped the scoring with 35pts, with a remarkable outward nine of one over par.
Everyone at Goswick made our visit memorable (great fish and chips) and our thanks go to recently arrived host secretary Rory Davidson and his staff all of whom were most charming, helpful and efficient. Thanks too, to the Captain, Committee and members for allowing us to stage one of our Qualifying Tournaments over their splendid links. We very much look forward to returning (on a slightly calmer day…) in the future.
To Dean Poynter of Eagle and Duncan Rougvie of Timeofftimes/BRS thanks for your support and to Jezz Ellwood (who described his round as a ‘0-5 thrashing = Ellwood Media v Goswick’) for the photos.
