Scoring was extremely good, as was the general pace of play, with most competitors round in 3 hours 40 minutes and thus the projected time for lunch was brought forward. Thank you to everyone who took note of the ’10 Commandments’ (those who didn’t….!?). The winner, on countback, was Will Hendry (9) Teignmouth with 37 pts from a delighted Eddie Bullock (0) and the well-travelled Mick Wain (11) Matlock. Fourth, on 36pts was Stephen Toon (9) Sunningdale. Then came a band of previous qualifiers: Mike Verhelst (6) Bury St Edmunds, David Owen (9) Poulton Park, David Mabbbott (8) Eltham Warren and Martin Gillett (5) Hobbs Cross all on 35 pts. The remaining qualifiers were John Douglass (7) Liphook, Gina Rivett (23) West Hill, Chris Gotla (3) North Hants, Stephen Billings (2) Redlibbets and Adrian Dawson (9) Woodcote Park, all on 34 pts.. Our congratulations to them all and we look forward to seeing them at Hillside for the Final in May next year. Congratulations to Diana and Keith Fisher on their steel wedding anniversary – see you at Hayling!
Thanks too, go to the Captain, Committee and members of Hankley Common for once again allowing us to stage one of our events over their wonderful course. It is a privilege which that we appreciate and never take for granted; also to Lynne Callender, Assistant Secretary, and our host, restored to full fitness with a new hip, Iain McColl, for their considerable help in making things run so smoothly.
There was a welcome selection of ‘new’ boys and girls and we hope that they will return in the spring and try to join the 30 plus who have already booked their places at the Final. There is space at all the remaining Regional Qualifying Tournaments:
Our Supporters were out in full force playing and dispensing. Phil McInley of Eagle Promotions, Mike Harris of Golf Monthly, Richard Barker and Chris O’Hagan of Teeofftimes all teed-up. Ed Wills of Sports Marketing Surveys came in with an excellent 37 pts. Whilst Paul Mainstone of Keystone and chocolatier Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal roamed the course with cameras and chocolate, whilst slow (?) gin sales were brisk. We were very disappointed to be without Jeremy Snyman of Keystone, whose daughter had to be taken to A and E but who is now on the mend.
Finally a note of very special thanks to Contributor Jezz Ellwood who forewent playing in favour of filming the entire proceedings, including interviewing competitors and supporters. We will all look forward to viewing his epic on Golf Monthly TV in the near future. Watch this space.
