Hankley Common GC – Wednesday, August 19th 2020

The GCS – 24th Open is back, soggy round the edges, but back with a bang after 10 months

A very BIG thank you to all who took part, it was wonderful after all we have all gone through to be competing again and back on the course,.

We had a full field with the amazingly good scoring, given the dreadful overhead conditions. Both Martin Gillett (6) Hobbs Cross and Alan Davey (6) scored 36 pts, however, they had previously qualified at Sunningdale and Broadstone.

The Hankley Common qualifiers were:

Chris Gotla (4) Contributor, 35pts, Greg Kemsley (5) Hassocks, 34pts, Robert Shaw (14) Tyrell’s Wood, 33pts, Gary Oatham (13) Thorndon Park, 31pts, Mark Haskell (5) Teignmouth 30pts. We look forward to seeing them all at Saunton in May 2021 for the Final.

Our thanks go to our host GM Alex Woodward for looking after us and coping with the deluge of storm ‘Ellen’ and the Members of Hankley Common for allowing us to hold this event so soon after the lifting of Lockdown (although how many would have wanted to venture out on such a foul day is anyone’s guess). They would have had the consolations, as many of The GCS – Open’s competitors did, of the renowned Hankley carvery lunch.

Thanks too to our Supporters, Golf Genius’s Craig Higgs, having driven down from Yorkshire and Nick Smithwho scored a very creditable 29pts. Golf Car UK’s  Matt Patton and Rob Purvey who also scored very well with 34pts. John Hayes of Marsh/Bluefin Sport, back after a couple of years absence. Thanks also to Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal, who was absent, sunning himself in a remote part of Scotland with midges, mist and sun screen, for the prizes (the chocolate selection suffered as a result).

For all who didn’t qualify… make sure that you enter Barton on Sea on September 28th.

N.B. if you only enter St George’s Hill, you will be on the waiting list.

My apologies to Andy Beal (0) Sailsbury & S Wilts 32pts!! Who also qualified… water in the works?
