‘They’ say that a picture is worth a 1000 words and despite Philip scaling the most enormous ladder this one hardly does the day or the Littlestone links justice. It certainly was a near perfect day to end qualification for The GCS – 23rd Open, and with a links in wonderful condition despite a stiff and chilly breeze scoring was remarkably good.
Callum Austin (3), revelling in his new role at Royal Cinque Ports took first place with 38pts on countback from Martin Gillett (5) Hobbs Cross, another who had previously qualified. In third and taking full advantage of the Last Chance Saloon was John Aughterlony (12) Rochester & Cobham Park, back at the Final once again, with 37pts. Robert McGuirk (0) Prince’s and guest, came in with 36pts on countback from a very nervous (B&HA…!?) Scott Ballentine (9) Royal Worlington, Martin Ball (14) Eaglescliffe also qualified on the same score. The other three qualifiers for Ganton next month were Dan Hacker (0) Stratford on Avon (a nine hour round trip – thank you!), Mike Ducker (0) Reigate Hill and David ‘Sherlock’ Holmes (14) Prestbury all on 34pts. Our congratulations to them all. See you next month.
Commiserations to those who tried (on several occasions) but didn’t make it – there is always the 24th Open, so enter now!
It was very pleasing to see some new faces too, along with Robert McGuirk, we had a number of ‘new boys’ Gary Salt – West Hove, Geoff Wise – Pyecombe (the long distance traveller), Jerry Kilby in his recent role at Woodcote Park, Nick Smith of Golf Genius who set a new standard in scoring (off the course).
Our thanks as always to everyone who travelled to The Saloon to make it a most enjoyable final qualifier, with very specially thanks to Sarah Saunders, Sales and Marketing Manager at Littlestone for not only orchestrating matters wonderfully well for us, but carried out dog sitting duty too. To Adrian whose front of house skills were much in evidence and all in the catering side of the Club who produced a terrific lunch – thank you. We are always conscious of the privilege extended to us by patient Club members and for the use of their superb links (it’s no wonder that it is used for Qualifying by The other Open), again a big thank you, and we would certainly like to return.
Supporters were attracted to Littlestone and no wonder. Richard Dixon of BRS/Teeofftimes showing the field a clean pair of Foot Joys with 39pts, closely followed by Matt Patton of Golf Car UK with 37pts and Liam Burns of Eagle giving three shots to the course managed 36pts. Others were Phil McInley (shorter working week = handicap reduction!), Rob Purvey – Golf Car UK, this time on the links playing rather than driving the buggy and Craig Higgs of Golf Genius, who on this occasion didn’t collect the sweep money!? Finally our thanks to P. Vince Esq., whose chocolate only serves to remind us of what he does for a living = riding a bike, or should that be engraving the next set of Crystal prizes for your Club?
