It never rains in northern Manchester, at least not for The Golf Club Secretary – Open Championship. Despite a nippy start it was shirt sleeve order by the back nine and the local health service were put on alert in case Howard’s knees become too burnt to continue, (view the Flickr gallery by clicking on link below for the detail). Everyone enjoyed Manchester’s spacious, challenging course which was in wonderful order which was in turn reflected in the excellent scoring. It is only a pity that there were not more ‘locals’ to share the delights, both on and off the course.
Stephen Boustead (17) Halifax West End, despite missing the shortest of short putts on the last, played powerful and steady golf to return 37pts and be the clear winner. Runner up was Mo Brooker (12), who had already qualified for the Final at Hillside with 34pts. The other two qualifiers were Brian Lever (12) Great Yarmouth & Caister in third spot, the most loyal of loyal supporters, also with 34pts and Philip Turner (25) Outlane, also on the same score. Our congratulations to all of them and we look forward to seeing them again in Southport for the Final on 17th/18th May.
Our thanks go to our host Hon. Secretary Daniel Stone and Assistant Secretary Geraldine Connor and all the staff (and members) at Manchester who made us incredibly welcome and who ensured that the day went very smoothly indeed. We would love to return in a few years’ time.
Thanks too, to Dean Poynter of Eagle, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal and Paul Mainstone, Sawted (whose text messages, the night before, cleverly reminded competitors of their tee-times), for their support and in the case of the latter two, chocolates, photos and being generally ‘good eggs’ out on the course. Also to Mike Harris and to Chris O’Hagan of Golf Monthly, who generously donated to each competitor a pair of tickets to the Manchester Golf Show at Eventcity on 24th-26th April; should you wish to attend – an email to Chris.OHagan@timeinc.com, might prove worthwhile!? Finally, no report would be complete without mentioning the most consistent top performer on the circuit, Jezz Ellwood (5) Ellwood Media/Golf Monthly/The GCS, whichever hat he is wearing, he makes the game look ridiculously easy, as he did yesterday with another 35pts. The full list of results can be found at www.TheGolfClubSecretary.co.uk
Below is the provisional draw for Seacroft = The Last Chance Saloon, on Monday 27th April, there are plenty of spaces ‘left’ should anyone feel like taking their ‘chance’, which, statistically, will be excellent!?
