Moortown GC – Monday, 28th October 2019

It was just about the perfect day to end the autumn series of Regional Qualifying Tournaments for The GCS – 24th Open Championship.

Cloudless skies, a short sharp frost that disappeared almost before play commenced, a course in excellent order, a splendid lunch and a Hole in One.

Our thanks to Peter Rishworth our host, the Club and its members for once again allowing us to tackle the stern test that is Moortown. It simply is one of the best venues for The GCS.

Given the weather beating that everywhere has received, the course, whilst playing long, was rewarding and produced a couple of clear winners. Martyn Bonner (10) Notts (not quite a new boy, having previously played four holes in the 23rd Championship) came in with 32pts to lead the qualifiers. On the day, Yorkshire qualifying specialist (and elsewhere), David Owen (9) Poulton Park, had the highest points tally with 35. Chris Cuttler (6) Dore & Totally also had 32pts and had similarly previously qualified.

On 31pts points and once again qualifying for a Final were James Nairn (10) Crowborough Beacon and Ben Tawell (5) Newton Green. The GCS – Open defending Champion (winner at Ganton – for the second time) Matthew Bowman (12) had 30pts

Heading the list on 29pts and qualifying with the aid of a spectacular Hole in One at the 17th, was Adam Riddle (3) Royal Ashdown Forest (pictured above).

Thank you David Owen and again, well played

Our Supporters we out in force and fared very well. Malcolm Pennycott (0) Eagle was amongst those on 29pts. Well played. A point behind was Rob Purvey (5) Golf Car UK, a point ahead of Neil Hartley (10) Bluefin Sport. Matt Patton (10) of Golf Car UK and Craig Higgs (11) and Nick Stocking Golf Genius had their minds on scoring off the course. Philip got his drone out, delivered the chocolate in the conventional fashion and is even now busy engraving Adam’s memento… and yes Majestic engrave Crystal too.

We take a breather now until March, when the race to Saunton will really hot up…

You don’t need reminding, IF you are not one of the 40 qualifiers to date. There are three, already well-supported tournaments to come.

Denham – March 31st

Woodbridge – April 8th

Teignmouth – April 16th, aka The Last Chance Saloon
