Notts GC – Monday, 9th April 2018

The GCS – Open in 2018 got off to wonderful start at Notts Golf Club, Hollinwell.

We are greatly indebted to the Members, our host, secretary/manager Martyn Bonner and his team (especially the tireless bar manager Tracey) for a memorable day.

Quite one of the best qualifying tournaments in the Championship’s history, Notts had it all. Always a great test, the course was presented in wonderful condition, with firm and fast greens, a triumph at this time of any year but doubly so after the ghastly winter everyone continues to endure. With nothing more than a gentle breeze and with just about everyone keeping dry there was even a glimpse of a shadow at one point – true GCS weather!

With such favourable conditions and a quality field it was not surprising that scoring was good, but how good no one could have foreseen. The winner with a stunning 38pts was Jonathan Moore (4) Royal Cromer, closely followed by Chris Gotla (2) Beaconsfield, round in one stroke less – 73 – for 37pts. Tim Stephens (3) Luffenham Heath and shortly on the move to pastures new, came third with 36pts. New boy Callum Austin (3) Old Fold Manor had 35pts for fourth. Just to prove that it wasn’t entirely a Category 1 show, Jon Northover (12) Robin Hood and Ian Chamberlain (8) Frinton both qualified with 34pts as did Gary Peddie (5) St George’s Hill. We look forward to seeing them all at Formby next month.

Competitors came from all parts of the UK to play Hollinwell many for the first time. Some qualified, others came close and others didn’t… there is still time, and places, to reach the 22nd Open Final. Next week at Pyecombe on Tuesday 17th and the Last Chance Saloon at Southerness on Friday 20th (A weekend away perhaps?). Book now!

No report would be complete without thanking our Supporters, without whom the Championship could not exist. Roger Gillingwater represented Marsh, Liam Burns Eagle, Bob King BRS/Teeofftimes, photographer and scorer Paul Mainstone of Sawted, magician, chocolatier and photographer ‘Philip (Vince) from Majestic’ (Crystal), not forgetting several valued Contributors to The GCS. We were also delighted to welcome Craig Higgs of Golf Genius.

Accommodation for the Final will be at The Ramada Plaza, Southport PR9 0DZ, a luxury 4-star hotel set in the heart of the town’s modern waterfront development and one that has received The Golf Club Secretary seal of approval on several occasions in the past.
