The penultimate Regional Qualifying Tournament for The GCS – 22nd Open Championship was played over the hills of Pyecombe on a wonderfully presented course in delightful spring sunshine, even a hint of shirt sleeve order, despite a more than two club ‘breeze’. Windmills and wildlife abound and when you have scaled the peaks, the views on such a day are breath-taking. No effort had been spared by the staff both on and off the course to ensure we enjoyed the best of days and we did.
Our thanks go to all at Pyecombe particularly the members who offered the most warmest of welcomes; not to mention our host Alan Davey, who, with his team, came to the rescue when North Hants advised that it could no longer accept our fixture.
The qualifiers were led by past Champion Stephen Billings (3) Redlibbets with 34pts, a point ahead of runner up David Owen (10) Poulton Park, a previous qualifier. Julie Ruscoe (12) Colchester stormed to the turn with 20pts, paused for a photo-opportunity and sustenance, coming home with just 13pts, but neatly qualified (again!). James Nairn (9) Crowborough Beacon and Phil Bonsall (2) Piltdown on 32pts were the remaining qualifiers. Our congratulations to them all and we look forward to seeing them at Formby in a month’s time.
And so we move to the ABF qualifier at Southerness on Friday, where the competition will be very fierce indeed…
Our thanks go to all who attended including the ‘new boys’, the Supporters, Liam Burns from Eagle, Charlie Swann and Richard Dixon of BRS/Teeofftimes, John Hayes of Marsh. Scorer and photographer (pixs to follow) extraordinaire, Paul Mainstone of Sawted. Tim Read and Matt Patton (whose score of 37pts off a reduced handicap, will go unmentioned!) of Golf Car UK. And finally the Isle of Wight tripper himself, complete with choccy ‘van’ and camera, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal.
See you in a couple of days…?
