Sherwood Forest GC – Wednesday, 31st October 2018

Sherwood Forest on All Hallow’s Eve saw a crisp sunny morning for the last Regional Qualifying Tournament for The GCS – 23rd Open Championship in 2018.

Sherwood Forest GCThe mid-term report is very satisfactory, there have been over 270 separate entries over the seven tournaments and we have now qualifiers for the Final at Ganton in May 2019 and of course there are still three more qualifying tournaments to go.

Our Supporters, without whom we couldn’t stage The Championship, have been with us just about everywhere and have not only enjoyed themselves but have benefitted as well.

Back to sunny Sherwood and whilst not sleeve order it was a fine golfing day, after one or two hiccups including the greenstaff hollowing tining the greens whilst we were playing… the field produced some remarkable scores.

Out front on his own by a single point was Ben Tawell (6) Newton Green with a superb 39pts, four points ahead of Mike Verhelst (8) Bury St Edmunds. Richard Hall (10) Luffenham Heath’s new GM, qualified for his first Final with 34pts on countback from Matthew Bowman (12) Ely City and another GCS – Open Stalwart, Graham Finney (17) Mickleover. The final qualifying places going to Judy Barker (20) Bishap’s Stortford and James Washington (8) Bradford both on 33pts. Well played everyone and we look forward to seeing you at Ganton in May next year. It was very good to welcome some new faces, Tim Kent – Halifax Bradley Hall, Chris Walker – Bluefin Sport, as well as ‘Head Girl’ Diana Fisher , back to irrepressible form after being poorly.

Our thanks to all at Sherwood Forest especially Matthew Moult, who was extremely helpful. It is a wonderful course and one that we would hope to return to in years to come.
