Sunningdale GC – Monday, 21st October 2019

On Monday, 21st October no one really cared about the weather. The New Course was in superb order, with a good deal of run around the greens given the pasting that it had received from the autumn weather. It brought the cream to the top and for those who found it not only awe-inspiring but a challenge too far, there was always the consolation of lunch!

There have been many plaudits, which are really for the Club. Among the kind comments (for which many thanks)…

Sunningdale – Best Yet!!

That will really take some beating

Everything was superbly arranged

A fantastic day at a wonderful venue

Oh Happy Day!

The winner on the day was (everyone) Jonathan Moore (4) Royal Cromer with 35pts.

Runner-up, and putting the events of Northants County behind her, was Judy Barker (20) Bishop’s Stortford with 34pts, (Liam Burns of Eagle scored 34pts off +3!). In third place was Paul Smith (6) Faversham and fourth Phil Bonsall (2) Piltdown both on 33pts. The remaining Qualifiers for the Final at Saunton, in May 2020, were Jon Hall (3) Headingley 32pts, Darren Murphy (+2) Harborne (with the best gross score), Callum Austin (2) Royal Cinque Ports and Martin Gillett (6) Hobbs Cross all on 31pts. Scoring, given the conditions, was excellent, again a testament to the course and to the determination of the competitors. Suffice to say, the day was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to Nick Smith of Golf Genius, the full list of results can be found at:

Our thanks go to The Captain, Committee and Members for their generosity in allowing us to once again enjoy their wonderful course and superb Club. It is a privilege and a great pleasure. We hope to be able to return in years to come.

Breakfast and lunch were of course impressive, which, whilst being the norm for Sunningdale, sets the bar at an unattainable level for other clubs (and ourselves).

Personal thanks go to Events Manager Anne Gladman and Restaurant Manager Sherin for all their help and patience (not to mention the wonderful jacket!). It was much appreciated.

The Supporters were almost out in full and enjoyed themselves, like everyone else. We all know that we wouldn’t have been able to stage this Regional Qualifying Tournament without them. One in particular… Philip, the man of many parts, who is not only the longest serving Supporter of The GCS – Open Championship, but also, as he sometimes points out, chief photographer. Taking photos (and chocolate provision/distribution) isn’t his main job!? Majestic take just as much care with their engraving of your beautiful Crystal. Order now in time for C<r($t%@s?
