Finally, we got there!
After many disruptions, cancellations and postponements, and some 621 days after we started out at Goodwood on September 10th, 2019.
The GCS will be eternally grateful to the captain, committee and especially general manager, Martyn Bonner, for coming to our rescue and generously allowing us to play our final at one of the UK’s very finest heathland courses at such short notice. Also to you, the Finalists, for making the effort in these still strange times to come to Nottinghamshire from all parts of the UK to be with us yesterday.
At the end of the day, four players finished tied on 34 points – Stuart Gillett and Phil Bonsall Piltdown from the first group out, Callum Austin Royal Cinque Ports in the second group, and then, fittingly, Gary Oatham in the final group to finish in front of watching clubhouse.
Gary had accumulated 15 points on the back after the 17th hole and looked to have it won when his pitch from 100 yards into 18 covered the flag all the way, only for an unexpectedly firm bounce to send his ball through the back. He ended up taking six and lost out on countback over the last three holes to Callum, amassing 3, 2 and 1 points to Callum’s winning 2, 3, and 2 points. How fitting that, after 621 days, it should all come down to the final shots in the final group!
Mention too for William Swan of Swan Golf Design, who beat the field with 36pts!
Our congratulations to the winner of this closest of Championships. For Covid reasons, there could be no trophy presentation on the day, but the sought-after trophy will soon be winging its way to Deal, with the runners-up prizes also being delivered to their home clubs.
We were once again fortunate to have almost-GCS weather, with a sharp shower to start but then everyone kept dry until the end, with more than the occasional glimpse of sunshine.
As ever, our thanks must go to those invaluable Supporters who have remained loyal throughout the last two years. Majestic Crystal, Golf Genius, Bluefin Sport and Golf Car UK all contribute to making The GCS – Open the outstandingly successful championship that it is now, and will continue to be in the future… especially with ‘The Race to Royal St George’s’ to look forward too over the coming year.
So, that’s it for The 24th GCS – Open Championship, but don’t put your competitive feet up just yet and wait for the autumn as, this year, our 25th campaign tees off next Tuesday, June 1st at Denham (still time to enter!?). Two further events are planned for the summer at Conwy and St George’s Hill before the traditional autumn swing kicks off in September at Pleasington.
We think the line-up for our 25th Championship is one of our best ever, if not the best, and we look forward to seeing you somewhere along the road…
