The GCS – 25th Open Championship, Round Five

Our return to Pannal Golf Club was a delight. From Jaine’s and our host David Tilbury’s very warm welcome, through the on-going transformation of the course with new drainage and tree clearance, topped off with a delicious ‘lunch’.

An apt choice of tie, Jon Hall receives his Majestic Crystal

Again we were blessed with ‘GCS weather’ with almost cloudless skies, although the ‘breeze’ made the course long off the whites. The views, including the Crimple Valley viaduct, were as stunning as ever.

Scoring was by no means easy. Jon Hall (2) Headingley, a previous GCS – Open Champion (20th – Brancaster, 2016) led the qualifiers to the 25th Final, at Royal St George’s in May next year, with a handicap beating 37pts. Runner up was Chris Cuttler (9) Dore & Totley, another serial Finalist, with 35pts and the in third came ‘new boy’ Sean Boyle (9) Chesterfield, also with 35pts. Our thanks go to all at Pannal for making us so welcome and for providing an all-round excellent day, just what we all needed.

The Supporters were in good form too, with Rob Purvey of Golf Car UK coming second with 36pts and Marc McCraken ably supporting him further down the list. Thanks to another ‘new boy’ Jake Rhodes of Golf Genius who coped splendidly with the inevitable WHS handicap changes – a real pain. Chris Walker of Bluefin Sport was another with a good score of 33pts. No Philip, but still chocolate – thank you, very busy engraving away (get you orders in early…?). He is just like Adele, no need for other names! But no photos sadly, despite the aforementioned stunning views.
