The GCS – Open Championship is indeed fortunate to be play to play some of the most celebrated courses and links throughout the UK, almost invariably in wonderful weather. As Majestic Crystal’s Philip Vince’s pictures show Harry Colt’s Thurlestone, the UK’s Pebble Beach (PB is flat… Thurlestone is uphill, except for two holes!), is no exception.
A select and enthusiastic field gathered for the penultimate Regional Qualifying Tournament of the 23rd Championship. The winner and previous qualifier, for once without the aid of his trusted caddy Mandy, was Tim Aggett (0) Sidmouth with 35pts.
Runner-up and another previous qualifier and long distance traveller, was Gareth Evans (5) West Cornwall with 34pts. In third came our genial host Simon Bawden (4) Thurlestone, who qualifies for the Final at Ganton next month. ‘New boy’ Michael Sawicki (9) who is about to move ‘home’ from Parkstone to Royal Birkdale (many congratulations) came next on 32pts and also qualified for Ganton. The remaining qualifying places went to David Cook (14) and Julian Reynolds (16) East Devon, which just goes to show you can never travel too far or hopefully… Well played to all.
Our thanks go to everyone at Thurlestone, Captain, Committee, Members and staff, but in particular our host Simon for the warmest of welcomes and a highly successful and enjoyable day.
Mention too for our Supporters. First, two other ‘new boys’ David Christmas and Dan Thompson of Bluefin Sport, we look forward to seeing both of them at future GCS – Open Championship events. Richard Dixon of BRS/Teeofftimes topped the leaderboard on 35pts, whilst Liam Burns (+3) of Eagle came in with 33pts, a score matched by The GCS’s Jezz Ellwood and Golf Car UK’s Matt Patton. Another ‘new boy’ Golf Genius’s latest wizard Nick Smith had 29pts and produced the perfect set of scores!
Thanks to all who joined us for a delightful day – it was exactly what The GCS – Open Championship is famous for = good course, good food, great company and wonderful weather. Thank you.
