Walton Heath GC – 4th November 2010

The Perfect Day! Walton Heath had everything, a superb course (The New), perfect weather, a large field, excellent scoring and a marvellous ‘lunch’.

The winner with a magnificent 40pts, was Christopher Gabbey (9) Royal St. George’s who had two consecutive 4pt holes and nearly made another eagle at the 255yd 4th (his 15th), where his tee shot grazed the hole – two putts for a solid birdie followed. Runner up with a very creditable 38pts was Simon Lawrence (5) Basingstoke. Next came Stephen Billings (2) Redlibbets and John Edgington (12) Faversham, both recording 36pts, Stephen pipping John on countback for third prize. The other qualifiers for the Final at Rye in May 2010, were David Owen (8) Poulton Park (a long, but worthwhile journey) on 35pts, Gerry Honeysett (6) Haywards Heath 35pts, John Hunt (5) The Berkshire 34pts, David Mabott (9) Eltham Warren and Steve Murphy (8) Shirley Park, both ‘new boys’ on 33pts. The final qualifier and long distance traveller, was Stewart Barnes (6) Yelverton. A mention should also be given to The GCS’s Peter Evans, who on one of his ‘home’ courses came in with 37pts having “putted appallingly”; he won’t be playing off 12 again…

Our thanks go to all at Walton Heath, their Captain, Committee and Members and especially to Secretary Mike Bawden, to whom we also add a most enjoyable and long retirement. Thanks also to our supporters, Paul and Tom from Golf Monthly, Philip McInley of Eagle, Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal and Jonas/Clubminder’s Steve Berger and Paul Mainstone who had the benefit of the assistance of his daughter and p.a. Stefanie. Stefanie also made a brave foray out on the course to assist with chocolate delivery, which is always a treat and much appreciated – “thank you” to Philip from all of us.
