Woodbridge GC – 20th October 2009

What a pleasure to be at Woodbridge for the sixth Regional Qualifying Tournament of the 14th Open Championship, everything went according to plan (well almost, someone had the wrong date in their diary, but never mind…). Testing conditions with a strong breeze that at times became distinctly chilly, but the course, including the gorse and trees, was in wonderful order.

It was certainly to the liking of the in form Ian Symington (12) Royal West Norfolk, who, despite two blobs and an adventure down a rabbit hole, claimed a superb score of 38 pts. Neil Sjoberg (8) Epping came second on 36pts, but had already qualified for the Final at Rye next year. In third place and the second qualifier came his wife Gaye (15) with 32pts and the third qualifier was Tony Tyrell (15) Fynn Valley, our congratulations to them all for reaching the Final. A mention too of Andrew Brown (12) of Eagle Promotions, who had an excellent score of 33pts – we await the Eagle play-off for a place in the Final with great interest; well-done chaps.

Our thanks to Woodbridge, its Captain, Committee and Members, not forgetting Andrew Bull, our host, for a very warm and generous welcome, we were looked after extremely well. Thanks also to our supporters, the aforementioned Andrew Brown, Paul Mainstone of Jonas/Clubminder and Philip Vince of Majestic Crystal, whose chocolate never fails to sustain and impress, despite being distracted by helicopter gun ships!
