Round four of The GCS – 25th Open Championship was once again payed at Woodbridge GC and was in the words of one Supporter ‘an excellent autumn day, wonderful course, friendly people, all familiar and very familiar’.
The course has improved immeasurably, with much tree felling and heather management. The greens were wonderful, and for the time of year impressively fast. For those who couldn’t make it, they missed a treat.
The trees were avoided and the greens mastered by one of the Championship’s most loyal and long serving contestants Martin Gillett, Hobbs Cross, who amassed 38pts, two clear of Keith Duff, valued Contributor. Ben Tawell, Newton Green, headed those on 34pts, followed by Mike Verhelst, Bury St Edmunds, much to the relief of his finalist ‘passenger’ Brian! Martin and Mike have now both qualified for eleven Finals in a row. The final qualifier, again on 34 pts, was Iain Evans, Thorpe Hall. Our congratulations to them all, they have succeed in the Race to Royal St George’s. Which now moves to Pannal near Harrogate for round five.
Our thanks go to our host Sean Clark, PGA, whose return to the course after a tough two years was marked by an opening booming drive and ended with a very respectable score. Thank you Sean, well played, please pass on our thanks to your Captain, Committee and members, many of whom were out playing ahead of us, for their generosity in once again allowing us to bring The Championship to Woodbridge. It is a privilege and pleasure we cherish.
Our Supporters were out in force. John Hayes of Bluefin Sport/Marsh, James Sibbles of Golf Genius (good score!) was kept busy with the many last minute changes to handicaps under WHS!? And last, but by no means least Philip, who stopped off to drone the Orwell Bridge (as you will see) before being all over the course dispensing his generosity – which we all appreciate.
Philip’s non-engraving work can be seen at
